Nothing Like Roast Chicken… with Dirt

Litson manok stand beside the busy road

Litson manok stand beside the busy road

Late last week, my Man and I decided to have litson manok [roast chicken] for lunch.  It is funny because while we were eating I asked him what is litson manok in English and we just could not figure it out! Later that night I thought, maybe it is roast chicken, is it?

But obviously it is not your ordinary roast chicken, for instead of being oven cooked, our litson manok is slowly turned,  smoked and roasted on top of charcoal, like a grill minus the actuall grill part. You can get it almost anywhere and they usually are sold beside roads everywhere.

It is very tasty too! And I know the secret – it is because of all the dirt and smog that clings to it from the road. LOL!

And by the way, if you will look a little closely at the photo you will see a stripe-wearing PM reflected oh-so-lightly by the glass on that litson manok stand.

  2. witsandnuts,
exactly the point! i remember my cousin from canada who came home about two years ago and he said menudo cooked by his mom there doesn’t taste as good as the ones here and we told him it is because of the dirt factor. you got to have dirt.

    kat,
i also have a favorite litson manok shop LOL the ones you mentioned cannot be found here though. usually we have that when we go home so late there is no time to cook anything, or lazy, like you LOL

  8. Yes, I can see your face reflected there.

Your Highness, you’re one hot chick (no, the tagalog translation of Hot chick isn’t “lechon manok”)

  11. For some reason, chicken grilled with gas flame isn’t as tasty with those grilled with charcoal :) you maybe right – it is the dirt and smog that gives that wonderful flavor

  16. Good, may tama ka! Litson manok is roast chicken, just like roast pig being litsong baboy. There are a lot of oven-roasted chicken anywhere here in GSC, are there too in ur place?

  17. We usually eat litson manok at home when we’re too lazy to cook. I most especially love the ones from Bugong, but I don’t know if Bugong’s Chicken can be found outside Manila. Second runner up’s Ang Manok ni Sr. Pedro.

  18. Haha, you’re right about the dirt. It’s like the icing on the cake. The same thing with kikiam, squidballs, fishballs. Whenever I cook these, they are no better than the streetfood in Ayala. Maybe the dirt is the secret ingredient. =)
