I have one rocking blog friend who posts awesome photography on her blog. She takes them all herself. Some of my most favorite photos in her blog includes the art murals she stumbles upon. I think they are amazing.
Growing up, I did not have a strong inclination to art but recently I’ve been into seeing art museums. I think I’m good at appreciating art of any kind. I’m no pro though and I do not know a lot. I just look at something and find what is good in it, indulge, and move on. 🙂
Day 08 — If I could afford it, the piece of famous artwork you would find in my home is…
I’m certain there are tons of priceless artworks out there but I choose Spolarium by Juan Luna to hang in my home (It is now displayed in the National Museum of the Philippines). It is huge and it will take up a lot of space and I do not have the slightest clue how to keep it clean (it is an oil painting but there are rumors real blood is used in the painting too) but I think it is brilliant. It is arguably the most famous Filipino painting out there. It is ancient, painted in 1884, and it won top awards in Spain at a time when the Philippines is still a Spaniard colony. I’m thinking that moment was like, “Bitch, please.” 😆
The painting is goth and gruesome and normally I’d prefer my art to be undead but I appreciate the Spolarium for its message of freedom, justice, and humanity. The Philippines may be a sovereign country now but I can tell you that there are still hands who drag many Filipinos down, similar to the state of the gladiators in Luna’s Spolarium. It is not a fun thing to note but it is true, and unless the morals of the Spolarium are upheld, I fear this country will never reach its potential even up until my dying day.

I’m also not into art, painting especially because I find it intimidating. But yeah, learning how to appreciate art is just cool 🙂 Also I just can’t imagine squeezing the Spolarium in any house, it’s just so freaking huge! But since you have the money, then why not buy the entire museum na lang kaya diba? Hehehehehehe 😀

love that painting too. Really one of the darkest painting ever painted – one bloody peice of art nga if totoo ang rumor na may real blood na ginamit, ngayon ko lang yan narinig ah hehe.,Spoliarium also symbolizes the decay of society and triumph of ambition and greed over humanity.
If i got the money I’d buy the painting (or doodles?) Rizal made when he was in Japan. It’s on his diary, been looking for it for years. hehe.

It’s his visit there is the beautiful. romantic yung stopover nya sa japan nung 1888. shucks nainlove ba naman, ganda ng kanilang romance. hehe.

hahaha. sobrang chickboy nun. hehe. yan ang isa sa mga aspects ng buhay nya na di dapat tularan. dyoskopo may babae ata yun in every city he visited. hehe 😀

i am not familiar with artists and their opus. i however went to the asian art museum here in san fran one year when the pinoy greats (amorsolo, luna, etc) paintings were loaned to the museum.

my history professor before said that when the painting was delivered to the RP, it has to be broken then rebuild again. I also heard about the blood being used for the paints, hehe…

Good choice… never heard of the work, but you make such a compelling case for it.
I have a limited edition print of Bev Doolittle’s The Earth Is My Mother, such a complex work, as are all her paintings.
it’s ancient. i find that the spolarium has a lot of spirit, that is why i like it. i have not heard of doolittle but she sounds interesting. i will look up her work and see for myself. 🙂
